The death took place at Newcastle, New South Wales, of Mr.W. A. Bees ton, formerly manager of the Hamilton branch of the Bank of Australasia- For years the deceased had suffered from illhealth. He was 50 years of age, and leaves a wife and two young eons. At a meeting of the office-bearers ot First Church, Dunedin, a cable message was received from the minister, the Hev. Graham H. Balfour, regretting that, although his health, continues to improve, his medical advisers -insist that he must cancel the passage that he had taken'out for the next trip of the Paloona, and remain in Australia for a further period. A memorial photograph of the late Mr Matt. Hickey was presented to the Post Office Pastimes Club by Mrs Hickey yesterday, tho.flrst anniversary of his death. The late Mr Hickey served in the Post and Telegraph Department- for about thirty years, and at tbs time of his demise was controlling officer of the mailroom. He was a highly esteemed officer, and for some time occupied the office of president of the Pastimes Club. In unveiling the 'memorial, the chief postmaster, Mr H. D. Grocott, spoke of the late gentleman’s qualities, and of the affection in which he was held by his fellow-workers. Mrs Hickey appropriately responded. The following promotions are posted in last night’s "Gazette”: —The Wellington Regiment: Lieutenant A. H. Miles (9th C. Battalion) to be captain; Captain H. J. Thompson, M.C., from the Retired List, to be captain (10th C. Battalion); the seniority of lieutenant G. F. Bertrand is antedated to June 9th. 1917; Seoond Lieutenant A. G. C. Wallace, from the Auckland Regiment, to be second lieutenant (7th C. Battalion), with seniority, as from July Bth, 1921. Trans-ferer-Second Lieutenant L. J. O’Connell is transferred to the Canterbury Regiment; Lieutenant 5. J. King to the Reserve of Officers, Class I. (b); James Ernest Mays to he second, lientenant (4th Battalion); to he second, lieutenants (on probation), (4th Battalion), Hubert Cedrio Jepson and Augustus John John.
