EXPENSIVE JOY RIDE
MAGISTRATE’S ADVICE TO YOUTH “GO A LITTLE STEADIER.” A youth named Bernard Frederick Appleyard, 18 years of age appeared before Mr W. G. Riddell, S.M., at the Magistrate’s Court, yesterday, charged that on August 26th, 1922, (1) he converted to his own use so as not to commit theft, a motor-car valued at £3OO, the property of William John Ives; (2) he stole 4 gallons of benzine valued at 12s 6d, the property of William John Ives: and (3) he committed mischief by wilfully damaging a motorcar, the property of William John Ives, to the extent of £l2. Ohief-Detective Kemp explained that the accused was the son of very good parents and was resident at Petone. On the day in question, he rode in from Petone on a motor-cycle, and observing the complainant’s motor-car standing outside the football ground, he had lifted his cycle into the vehicle and haH driven away. In doing this, he had scratched the car and generally damaged the paint work to the extent stated. The car had been abandoned at Petone and was subsequently found by the Petone police. The accused had been before the court on two previous occasions. “Unless you go a little steadier, you will find yourself deprived of your liberty,” said His Worship. “I intend, however, to give yon one more chance.” On the first charge, Appleyard was fined £5, in default 21 days’ imprisonment, six weeks being allowed him in which to find the money. On the second count he was' fined 20s, amd ordered to miake good the price of the benzine, 12s 6d, within six weeks, In default seven days’ imprisonment. On the remaining charge, the defendant was convicted and ordered to make good the damage to the oar, £l2, within six weeks, in default one month’s imprisonment.
