DISASTER AT SEA
CHILEAN STEAMER SUNK. ONLY SIX SAVED. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. VANCOUVER, August 29. A message from Santiago, Chile, states that the Chilean passenger steamer I tat a has sunk off Choree Islands. One hundred and fifty are reported missing. A later message reports that all aboard the Itata, numbering 240 have perished. (Received August 30, 9.15 p.m.) SANTIAGO, CHILE, August 29. The latest reports show that 316 per ished in the Itata disaster. Only six were rescued. The steamer sailed from Coquimbo with 250 passengers, being heavily overloaded. She met rough cross seas, which damaged the rudder. A gale then caught the helpless ship, which from time to time was swept by enormous waves. She took a heavy list and sank. Chilean warships which steamed to the scene were able to rescue only eix persons, who were clinging to th< ! wreckage.
