MYSTERIOUS FIRE
CHRISTCHURCH “PRESS” OFFICE DAMAGED. PEE PRESS ASSOCIATIONCHRISTCHURCH, August 30. A fife which might have had serious consequences but for being discovered early and promptly checked, occurred at 7 o’clock this morning on the top floor of the “Press” Company’s buildings, in the lithographic department, portions of which were badly damaged. The floor on which the fire occurred has no gas heaters or fireplaces, and all the machinery is electrically driven. As far as is known there was no one in the building when the fire was discovered. The damage by fire, as in the case of the fire in the “Lytfleton Times” office last Friday, was coo fined to the department and its cont nts, and as the floors are of concrete little water penetrated to the lower portions of tho building. The fire was discovered by a porter from Warner’s Hotel, who visited the office for copies of today’s issue. The damage is estimated at £7OO. The total insurance on tho building, plant, etc., is £65,832, held in various offices.
