LADIES’ HOCKEY TOURNEY

CHAMPIONSHIP GAMES AT NAPEE®. FEB PRESS ASSOCIATION. NAPIER, August 29. The New Zealand ladies’ championship hockey tournament was continued today. The weather was again satisfactory and the interest of the public maintained. Results j A Section.—Marlborough B drew with Wellington, with two goals each, B Section.—Hawke’s Bay A (6 goals) beat Hawke’s Bay B (3). Poverty Bay (6) beat Wairarapa (2), contrary to expectationk GAMES DESCRIBED. Marlborough fully extended Welling ton who were equal champions with Poverty Bay last year. The teams were evenly matched, as the result indicates Play was fast and open. Wellington had the advantage in the early stages, but the work of the Marlborough forwards enabled Mrs Hogan to net the the first goal, whieh was the only score in the first half. Wellington opened strongly on resuming, and treated the spectators to bright hookey. After twenty minutes, Miss Williams soared for Wellington. Miss Fairweathor put Marlborough again in the lead by netting tne ball after some minutes of strenuous play. Wellington’s second goal was also.scored by Mjss Williams. The two Hawke’s Bay teams met, and the B’s opened well, hut A team eventually proved superior, though at times play was of a very even nature. Miss Ward scored four goals for the winners and Misses Lean and Sharpley one each. Miss Scott soored three for the lose s. Wairarapa opened strongly against Poverty Bay, and within two minutes Mis 9 Parker netted the ball. Poverty Bay soon became aggressive, and Mies Hill equalised. The game, was very evenly contested until half-time, both teams making a good showing. Wairarapa again opened well, and it wae some minutes before Poverty Bay was able to break thrpugh, and Miss Hei soored. Miss Hill next netted for Poverty Bay, and Mrs Beuck added a goal for Wairarapa. Poverty Bay scored two more goals. Light rain fell in the final stages of the game. The difference in the merits of tho teams was hardly %» great as the scores suggest.
