SEAMAN IN TROUBLE
STEALS TWO BOTTLES OF, SAUCE. A seaman named Charles Conchy, appeared before Mr F. K. Hunt, S.M., at tho Magistrate’s Court yesterday, on a charge of stealing two bottles or sauce, valued at 2s 6d, the property of the United States Shipping Board. Sub-Inspector McNamara said that the accused was a member of the s.s. Eastern Sea. Sergeant Scott had noticed the bottles in Cauchy’s hip pocket, and when accosted accused admitted that he had stolen the goods and was taking them ashore for Hie purpose of sale. The chief steward of the Eastern Sea was of the opinion that the bottles had been removed from the storeroom. Accused, who explained that he had taken the goods ashore for the purpose of making a “present” of them to a friend, was sentenced to seven days’ imprisonment, to be placed on board bis vessel if she sails before the expiry of the sentence.
