PREVENTED FROM WORKING
ALLEGATION AGAINST UNION. WATERSIDER OBTAINS DAMAGES. FEB PBESS HSSOCIATIOK. GREYMOUTH, August 50. A watersider, named Joseph Clarke, claimed £6 special and £4O general damages from the local Watersiders’ Union and its secretary (Mr H. Kirk), alleging that he was prevented from obtaining employment on the wharf. The railway wharf foreman deposed that Kirk had informed him that Clarke was 7s 9d m arrears with hit union dues, so witness understood that Clarke was an unfiiumcial unionist and was not to be employed. H. Kirk stated that Clarke had been in arrears since the quarterly payment! had been introduced. Thirty member] were allowed extended time in which to pay their levies, and Clarke war the only one in arrears. He did not 6eek work at certain calls on the wharf. The magistrate (Sir Mel drum) gav« a verdict for plaintiff for £3 6s 3d, loss of wages. Plaintiff was also allowed witnesses’ expenses.
