BATHS FOR THORNDON
DIFFICULTY IN SELECTING A SITE. A special committee of the City Council is at present endeavouring to acquire a suitable site at Thorndon for the construction of swimming baths. Some difficulty is being experienced, however, in selecting a desirable spot. The chairman. Councillor W. H. Bennett, stated at a meeting of Thorndon residents last evening that it seemed impossible to obtain a site. on the waterfront to meet the requirements of the council. Negotiations bad been opened with tbe Railway Department for a seotion which it was thought might be. suitable, but on dose investigation it did not appear to he desirable, as in tbe same vicinity railway locomotives would be housed, and colliers and oil vessels would be required to unload. Mr Bennett stressed the point that the £15,000 already raised for the construction of the baths was to he spent upon Turkish baths. That was the first call upon the council. Provision would be made for the Thorndon baths in the seoond instalment of the loan.
