EXPRESS OVERTURNS

FIFTY DEATHS; HUNDREDS HURT. An express train on the Philadelphia .and Reading railroad overturned, and fell down an embankment, while running at a high speed between Hammonton, New Jersey, and Camden (opposite Philadelphia, on the Delaware river), thirty miles away. Fifty persons are reported killed, and several hundred injured.—Central News. According to a Reuter message from New York, “nine persons are known to have been killed, but,” it is added, “it is feared that the death-roll may be increased.” The express,, says the message, was loaded with excursionists, and was travelling at 70 miles an hour when it ran into an open switch set for a freight train. TUe express ploughed ahead for 60ft, and then crashed down a 25ft embankment. Some 75 persons, badly injured, are in hospital. The Minister for Lands and Forests stated that last year Quebec province lost over £2,000,000 by forest fires, and that 800,000 acres were burnt down.
