Community Singing Witness Wellington’s Community Sing-! Who in their wildest dreams imagined that Wellington would take up Community Singing with such unrestrained enthusiasm? And yet the movement has proved an unqualified success. Watch the people at the Communitv Singing—hear them do the big sneeze stunt—see them shaking hands with one another at the leader’s behest—listen to their willing efforts to learn new songs and to their heartv singing of old familiar airs. Are these the so-called unsociable, self-conscious people of Wellington ? Some of us may find it difficult to reconcile the usual aloofness of the citizen* where any community matters are concerned with their abandon at the Singing. The whole thing is easily explained. In their every-day business walk and conversation the people of Wellington are living an artificial life, while during the Community Singing hour and in their own home they are their natural selves—sociable, kindly people. All they want is leadership—once a “Talk Wellington” Campaign is commenced in real earnest and those who have been placed in authority enter into the “boosting” idea with vigour the citizens will soon follow suit and talk Wellington until further orders.
