(By ‘'Carbine.' 1 ) The 'Wellington winter meeting opens on Saturday next and continues on Wednesday and the following Saturday. On the first day the Wellington Steeplechase will be run, on the second day the principal event will be the Parliamentary handicap, and the star item for the third day 'will be the Winter Hurdles. Oakleigh is to "be ridden in the Wellington Steeplechase by J. Roach. Khartoum is in such great fettle just ijow that his prospects of winning the Wellington Steeplechase are considered bright. Bobrinade, who suffered from a cold recently, is again on the tracks and is galloping so freely that he is almost sure to be brought up for the final day of the Wellington meeting. The Trentham tracks are in splendid condition at the present time, and if the weather holds the going will be fairly good. The surroundings of the course are in splendid trim. Tame Fox ha« not been nominated for the Winter Cup, but it is stated that he is to go on to Riccarton after racing at Trentham. Trentham candidates for the Winter Cup are Dainty Step, Halifax, Lord Desmond, Rose of Athens, Royal Box, Blackmail and Sunny Corner. J. Brown, the Hawera trainer, who brought Rational out, has another Absurd in his stable, and tho youngster is said to show considerable promise. Hylans, who won the Grand National Hurdles in 1920, and is an acceptor for the Winter Hurdles to be run next week, has joined P. T. Hogan's stable. For the Grand National Steeplechase thirty-three nominations have been received, for the Winter Cup sixty-nine, end for the Grand National Hurdles thirty-nine. Last {year the numbers were thirty-five, sixty-three, and forty. Pluto and Vespucci have been put into work again, and they are to be got ready for spring engagements. The northern trainer, E. J. Rae, has gone to Sydney and while there he will endeavour to pick up a good handicap horse for a patron. Waimai, Master Strowan and Coalition, three past winners of the Grand National Steeplechase, figure in this year's nominations for the race. Waimai won in 1916, Master Strowan in 1917, and Coalition in 1920 and 1921. Mr Bull is mixing it with Ngata and Omahu in a rather extraordinary manner. Ngata is an acceptor in the Steeple chase and: Omahu has been left in the Winter Hurdles. 'At Riccarton Ngata is entered for the Grand National Hurdles and Omahu for the Steeplechase.
