MAGISTRATE’S COURT

YESTERDAY’S SITTING. POLICE AND MAINTENANCE CASES. Mr F. K. Hunt, S.M., presided at yesterday’s sitting of the Magistrate’s Court, when police and maintenance oases were beard. Five first-offending inebriates were treated in tlie usual manner. For drunkenness, Peter Singleton, with three previous convictions against him, was fined £l, or ordered to go to gaol for three days. On a similar charge, Patrick George Dailly, w'ith one previous conviction against him, was fined 10s. in default 48 hours' imprisonment. BOTTLE-HOLDER INTERVENES. Joseph Carroll, a seaman with a somewhat battered appearance, pleaded guilty to a chargp of assaulting Albert Norman Sutherland, and also admitted having resisted Constable Marsh. Sub-Inspector McNamara stated that accused had been asked by Sutherland to hold a bottle of beer, while the latter engaged in a fight with a third party. Carroll bad taken the bottle, and had struct: .Sutherland on the face with it. When apprehended by Constable Marsh, accused had kicked tho policeman in the thigh. Several othex police officers had arrived on the scene, and accused had been arrested. Carroll was convicted and discharged on the first count, and was sentenced to fourteen days’ imprisonment for resisting the constable. A JOY RIDE SPOILT. Henry William Blake was charged with attempting to convert to his own use a Buick motor-ear, the property of Arthur Jacobs. Sub-Inspector McNamara stated that Jacobs had left his motor-car standing outside the Commercial Travellers’ Club. Another member of the club, noticing two men in the car, who immediately decamped, informed Jacobs of tbs occurrence. The latter gave chase, and caught tho accused outside the Town Hall. No damage had been done, but the wheels of the car had been turned ready to start, and the engine had been put in gear. Accused was fined £s,* in default fourteen days’ imprisonment. WINDOW BROKEN. Robert John Ashley wa6 charged with wilfully damaging a pane of glass, valued at £l, the property of Charlotte Amelia Fairchild. The accused, stated Sub-Inspector McNamara, went to Mrs Fairchild’s house to make some inquiries, and, not getting the information he wanted, put his fist through the window. He was fined 10s, and ordered to make good the damage. Forty-eight hours was allowed for payment. A SERIOUS CHARGE. Arthur Gordon Kale, charged with a serious assault on a little girl, was remanded to appear at the Carterton Magistrate’s Court to-morrow. MAINTENANCE CASES. Patrick Campbell, whose arrears amounted to £64 10s, was sentenced to six months’ imprisonment, the warrant to be suspended so long as he pays 20s per week. James Robertson, who was £IOB 10s lOd behind in his payments, wan sentenced to six months’ imprisonment, the warrant to be suspended so long as he pays 25s per wfeek. . Henry Courtney Scaife, who was £l2 10s behind in a deed of separation, was ordered to pay the arrears and £1 10s per week towards the maintenance of his two children. He was also ordered to pay costs.
