BULFORD CAMP

MEMORIAL CHURCH TO BE ERECTED. TO MEMBERS OF N.Z.E.F. Sir James Allen (High Commissioner, London) recently paid a visit to the South-West of England for the purpose of inspecting the graves of New Zealand soldiers in various cemeteries. In the course of his tour, Sir James had a conversation with the Rev. E. A. Chorley, vicar of Nether-Avon, in the churchyard of which village one of our soldiers is buried. The vicar brought under his notice a scheme for the erection of a church at Bulford Camp, an a tribute of admiration and affection to the memory of the men who were ,in training at Bulford, and gave their lives in the war. Bulford is the nearest station to Sling Camp, where practically all tho New Zealand infantry were trained during the war, and Bulford iB a locality very familiar to the members of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force. In a letter to the Minister for Defence (Sir Heaton Rhodes) ivith reference to this conversation, Sir James Allen stated that he promised Mr Chorley that he would bring the matter under the notice of the New Zealand Minister for Defence, but, at the same time, indicated his double as to whether the Government would bo able to make a contribution from the public funds towards the cost pf the erection of tho church. Sir Heaton Rhodes has replied, saying that he is of the same opinion in regard to a contribution, but stating that he will lay the matter beforo Cabinet, and make the intention of the vicar known through the Press, so that any exmembers of the N.Z.E.1., who put in so much time at Bulford Camp, may have the opportunity of contributing to the building fund if they so desire.
