A bushman’e term that has puzzled many students of the names of our native trees is “kai-kok." This is what the honeycomb-totara has been labelled. As far as can be ascertained, the name is a corruption of “kai-kaka,” literally kaka-food, probably alluding to the well-known habit of this bird of searching the trunk of the tree for grubs.— “Te Karere o Tane.”

A Dunedin solicitor who is at present visiting Master-ten, states that the rate of interest on first mortgages in Otago has never been more than from 6 to 6$ per cent., whereas in Masterton it is 7 per cent.
