AUSTRALIANS BEAT AUCKLAND VISITORS PLAY WELL IN THE MUD. rES. PRESS ASSOCIATION. AUCKLAND, July 2. The ** Soccer *■* match between Auckland and Australia was played under the worst of conditions. Heavy rain fell throughout Saturday morning, and ah though it lifted about 3 o’clock tlie ground was very wet and the ball greasy. Under ,‘the circumstances it was expected that Auckland would ehow to better advantage than the Australians, *but the contrary proved to be the case. >The visitors, who were leading by two goals to one at half-time, came out comfortable winners by four goals to one at the conclusion of the game. Taken as a whole the game was rather a poor exhibition of “Sdccer/' the ground, which wad under water in places, rendering any ©lever concerted efforts impossible. Nevertheless the Australians combined well, and their win was well deserved. AUSTRALIA SCORES EARLY. The visitors attacked from the outset, Brown opening Australia’s score by following up fast and bumping the hall into the net. Brown followed this up with another clever goal, thus putting Australia two goals in the lead. Ae the result of a magnificent piece of footwork, which surprised tho visitors, Knott scored for Auckland before half-time. THE SECOND HALF. In the second spell Australia had all the better of the play, and Brown added another goal. The shot completely Ibeat the local goalkeeper, who slipped in the mud. The Australians came again, and in a combined movement Brown sent in a shot which hit the bar. The ball rebounded, and Maunder, following flip fast, found the net. The final whistle sounded with the score— Australia 4 Auckland 1
