WRECK OF ELINGAMITE
AN EXPLANATION. With reference to tho paragraph which appeared in yesterday’s “Times” referring to tho wreck of tho Elingnraite, it was Bt&ted that, had soundings been taken, the position of this ship would have been known and that the running on the “Three Kings” rock would have been avoided. In connection with this matter, Cap. tain E. B. Atwood, who was in command of the EHngamito at the time, stated to a “Times” reporter last night: “The chart that I had to work with was misleading. The soundings were not roliabje and the islands were out of position. Since the Terra Nova’s survey new charts have been issued by the Admiralty which are no doubt reliable.”
