The executive of the Timaru branch of tho Farmers’ Union held a special meeting to-day to consider the attitude of tlie unio;i towards the situation at the freezing works. Tho chairman (Air J. Trotter) having pointed out the importance of tho matter to producers, and having expressed a hope that the companies would get all the labour they required, a suggestion to sit in committee was negatived. Air Trotter said tho chairman of one company told him that nothing had been dono yet in South Canterbury, as they were hoping that tlie men would resume work. They were, however, going to start with freo labour next Alonday. Atr G. Steven argued that the union should ho strictly neutral, and blamed both the men and the companies, the former for knocking oil ns they did, and the latter for giving occasion for trouble when there was only two or three weeks more work to do.
