I am also directed to submit the enclosed statement, which is an outline of the matter which the deputation hopes it may have an opportunity of elaborating more fully in an interview.” Copy of letter received from the Prime Minister to the New Zealand Educational Institute’s request to receive a deputation representing the teaching service: — “Sir, —I have the honour to acknowledge the receipt of vour letter of the 24tli instant, asking me to receive a small deputation representing the teaching service, in connection with tlie proposed second cut in public servants’ salaries. ‘‘ln reply, I regret to sav that, whilst I would have been only'too glad to meet the deputation referred to md circumstances permitted, it will be practically impossible for me to do so at any very early date owing to the particularly heavy pressure on my time just at present in connection with the opening of the Parliamentary session which takes place to-rporroTV._ In the meantime, I note the main points which would be brought forward by tlie deputation, and I shall be glad to arrange for these to receive the careful consideration of the Government. I might state that the whole question of • the further reduction in salaries is at present under review.”
