THE LARGS BAY
NEW TURN IN DISPUTE SANER ORGANISATION AND NONUNION LABOUR. UNIQUE SITUATION LIKELY. By Telegraph.-Press Assn.—Copyright. (Received June 29. 10.10 p.m.) SYDNEY, Juno 29. An important development has occurred in connection with the Largs Bay dispute. '1 he officials of what- are generally considered saner maritime organisations are taking action to unite anti declare that there will be no hitch if the Commonwealth Line attempts to introduce non-union labour into the Largs Bay in the dock and stokehold departments. The move has been kept a close secret, and when approached union officials declined to discuss the matter, but agreed that something must bo done immediately. The general opinion is that Mr Hughos’s threat to lay up the ships' is responsible for the move now afoot, as it is considered that tho id’ing of tho men employed by the Commonwealth Line would be one of the worst blows that could be dealt to unionism. If tho move readies finality a situation unique in Australian unionism will hare been brought about. After a meeting of marine stewards, at which the Largs Bay dispute was not considered, tho secretary stated that tho stewards would not work with, non-unionists. Mr Tom Walsh (secretary of tho Seamen’s Union) has arrived. Ho denies that his visit is of any significance so far as tho Largs Bay i- roncemed, or that there is any conflict of opinion between the Sydney branch and the executive of the Seamen’s Union. MELBOURNE, June 29. Mr Hughes threatens to lay up all the Commonwealth vessels unless the union officials agree to tho management retaining control. Ho states that the unions must choose between industrial crucifixion in order to serve Mr Walsh’s purpose and pander to his insatiable vanity and ambition, or sweep him and his like neck and crop out of the union.
