VISCOUNT JELLICOE’S OPENING SPEECH
His Excellency the Governor-General (Admiral Viscount Jeliicoe) opened the fourth session of the twentieth New Zealand Parliament yesterday afternoon with the usual ceremonial, A considerable number of people assembled in Parliament grounds to witness the arrival of His Excellency for the opening ceremony. The guard of honour, comprising 100 men, was furnished by H.M.S. Chatham, a company of'senior cadets from Scots College lined the steps, and the Regimental - Band from Trentham and the Scottish Society’s Pipe Band were also in attendance. Shortly before 2.30 j>.m. His Excellency, accompanied by Lady dellicoe, arrived. The Trentham Band struck up the National Anthem, and His Excellency inspected the guard of honour. In attendance upon the Governor - General were his personal staff —Captain Curtis (Private Secretary), Captain Mundy (Military Secretary), and Captain Southey (A.D.C.) —Major-General Sir E. W. C. C hay tor (General Officer Commanding New Zealand Defence Forces), Bri-gadier-General G. S. Richardson (General Officer in Charge of Brigadier-General Sir Donald McGavin (Director-General Medical Services), Commodore Hotham (Commanding H.M.S. Chatham), Captain Hamiltion (Naval Adviser to the New Zealand Government), Colonel J. J. Esson, Colonel C. G. Powtes, and Lieut.Colonel R. St. J. Beere (Coast Defence Commander). As His Excellency Eeft Government House for the ceremony, a saiute of 18 guns was fired from the Alexandra Barracks.
