THE LOGIC OF IT
TRADE WITH GERMANY IJOW AUSTRALIA WILL BENEFIT THEREBY. REPLY TO OPPONENTS. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. SYDNEY", June 27. The “Herald,” in a leader on the question of resuming trade with Germany, says that if the resumption were to result wholly to tho advantage of Germany, there would be a more solid basis for much of the criticism levelled against it. The paper points out that Germany needs some ot Australia’s loading prodtieta, and Australia must look to her to buy no inconsiderable portion of the surplus of such products. Should Australia refuse to take German goods in exchange, how will the Germans pay? They cannot pay in money, or only in paper money, which Australia does not want. Therefore, if she refuses to take goods in exchange for raw material, the upshot will be that Germany will speedily have to look elsewhere for her supplies. Manifestly, also, if Germany is to pay her reparation debts, in whiofi tho Commonwealth is interested, she must again build up her foreign trade. The Entente Alliance cannot have it both ways, any more than can Germany. They cannot thrust their old enemy out of participation in the trade of the great markets of tho world, and at the same time expect to receive payments, which can come only from ouch participation.
