OBITUARY

MR HENRY LAMB. The death occurred at his residence, Clyde quay, of Mr Henry Alexander Lamb, late Deputy Controller and Audi-tor-General, who had been confined to his house through a paralytic stroke for over twelve months. The late Mr. Lamb was the youngest son of John Stewart Lamb, M.D., Maida Vale, London, and was born in 1857, He was educated at Stonev Stratford and Chardstock colleges, and later joined the Stock Exchange in London. Shortly after his arrival in the Dominion in 1876 he joined the New Zealand Railway Service, and was the first stationmaster at Aramoho and Wanganui. In 1893 he joined the Public Trust Office, and later was transferred to the State Advances Office.. From there he was promoted to the Audit Department as inspector, and in 1919 was appointed Chief Clerk and Deputy Controller and Auditor-General, from which position he recently retired on account of ill-health. He is survived by his widow and a family of eight, five sons and three dauglibers, . namely: Messrs Herbert A. Lamo (Mataroa), P. W. Lamb (Hawera), J. L. Lamb (Tauniutu,- Gisborne), H. A. Lamb, junior (Accountants' Department, G.P.0.), A. S. Lamb (Tatuanui, Waikato), and Mrs R- G. Holmes (Muritai) Airs A. D. Fisk (Te Aroha), and Mies Lamb (Wellington). THE REV. JOHN BOWDEN, S.M.M.A. The death occurred yesterday of the Rev. Father J. Bowden, S.M., ALA. Father Bowden, who had been in indifferent health for some time past, was recently transferred from Wellington to Nelson, ftt which place he died. The deceased gentleman was born in Dunedin some fifty-seven years ago, and at an early age proceeded to Ireland to pursue his studies. After several years at St. Mary's College, Dundalk, Father Bowden went to Dublin, where he graduated at the R.U.I. with double first honours in Classics. Returning to New Zealand in 1891, he completed hie studies for the priesthood at St. Mary's Seminary, Meeanee, Hawke's Bay, and was ordained at Wellington in 1893. For twelve years Father Bowden was Classic master at St. Patrick's College, Wellington, a post which he filled with great distinction. Hie next appointment was to the staff of the Marist Seminary, in Hawke's Bay; but health obliged him to relinquish this position. Parish duties occupied Father Bowden for several subsequent years, during which time he ministered Wanganui, Upper Hull, and Wellington. Father -Bowden was a brilliant scholar and a cultured gentleman, and his genial, happy personality will be missed by a very large circle of friends. The funeral will take place at Nelson on Thursday morning next. MR FREDERICK EWINGTON. PE3 PRESS ASSOCIATION. AUCKLAND, June 27. Mr Frederick George Ewington is dead, aged 79 years. Deceased arrived by the sliip Indian Empire in 1862, and served in the Maori War. The late Mr Ewington. was formerly a member of the Prisons Board.
