COTTON MAGNATE FAILS
SENSATIONAL SMASH IN ENGLAND. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. LONDON, June 25. A sensation has been caused in Manchester by the issue of a receiving or. der in bankruptcy against Sir William Hopwood, a reputed millionaire. A year ago he .was a director in thirtyone cotton companies, and was known as “the modern Midas,” and the Napoleon of cotton mill finance. A few years ago his deals aggregated thirty millions. He is sixty years of age, and began life as a cotton-piercer. He was knighted last year. He made his greatest deals after the armistice, and in 1919 bought up thirty mills. Everything he touched turned into gold, and his church and charitable gifts totalled £50,000.
