THE DAIRY POOL
LONDON IMPORTERS’ ACTION. Messrs R. and W. Davidson, Henry A. Lane and Co., Lovell and Christmas, A. J. Mills ana Co., and Samnel Page and Son, the five companies who are at present acting as agents to the New Zealand Co-operative Dairy Company, 6ent out a letter to the newspapers, dated London, May 12th* reading as follows : "In view of the many comments which are daily appearing in the Press on the subject of the proposed pool of New Zealand butter ana cheese, we think that it may be of interest to your readers to learn the views of five of the principal importer* of colonial produce into this country. We are of opinion that it is incorrect and unfair to state that the object of the proposed pool is to establish a ring with a view to holding up the price to the consumers on this side. As a matter of fact, the promoters have no such intention, ana it must be obvious to anyone in the trade that such an object would be unattainable, because of the competition of dairy produce from other countries, which ensures the regulation of prices by the law of supply and demand. The two objects which appear to us to he reasonable are:— "1. To prevent the frequent and violent fluctuations which have taken place during the past two years, and which are disastrous both to the producers and consumers. "2. To organise by combination a more economical method of collection in New Zealand and distribution in this country, and thus cheapen the cost of produce to consumers, while saving expense to the producers. "In our opinion the interests of the provision trade are safeguarded by the assurance of the promoters that it is intended to distribute all produce through the existing trade channels." The letter is signed by the five firms concerned.
