GROWING EVIL
HUGE ANNUAL LOSSES IN NEW SOUTH WALESCONFERENCE DISCUSSION. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. (Reoeived June 2, 11.45 p.m.) SYDNEY, June 2. A conference has opened at the Chief Secretary’s offioe of representatives of those interested in shipping, including the waterside unions, to, discuss the cargo pillaging evil. Mr C. W. Oakes (Chief Secretary), .opening tho conference, said that the pillaging question was a serious one, which affected the whole of Australia. It was estimated that the loss to the State through pillaging amounted to £500,000 annually, and some estimates went as high as a million. One American skipper was reported to have said that he would be lucky if he got away from Sydney with the funnels intact. The Government would give all possible help to combat the evil.
The conference carried a motion appointing a committee to inquire into the recommendations of the recent Royal Gbmmission on pillaging and report to the conference. Mr Paxton, President of the Chamber of Commerce, advocated the establishment of a special force of waterside police. ,
