NOTES AND COMMENTS.

(By "Carbine/') To-morrow there will be racing at Otaki, Bllerslie and Dunedin. It is understood that the heavy taxation paid by the racing clubs and those who patronise race meetings is a matter that has been brought under the notice of the Taxation Committee.- Anomalies have been pointed out* and the possible ill effects of the present burden have been stressed. H. Goldfinch will ride Mangamahoe in the Cornwall Handicap to-morrow. The first race at EUerslie to-morrow is timed to start at 11 a.m. Ladoguer wiU be ridden at EUerslie by L. Berry. If Lochella starts at EUerslie he will be ridden by G. Feilding. There has been a lot of rain at Ellers* Ue. Don't forget that Bagdad loves the mud! Ona of the quiet fancies for the Rau kav/h Cup, to be run at Otaki to-morrow, is Detroit. When the old fellow beat Volo at Awapuni he carried 6.10 and Volo carried 9.8. If Volo starts to-morrow he will have 9.9, and Detroit is weighted at 7st. The distance at Awapuni was nine furlongs, and at Otaki it will be ten furlongs. Volo was unlucky in his run up the straight at Awapuni, but was gathering Detroit at the finish. Another thine* is that Detroit had the services of H. Wiggins on that occasion and was particularly well handled. • However, if the present wet weather continues the going will be just to Detroit’s liking. The big New Plymouth gelding, Alteration, ojave such a good display over the hurdles at EUerslie this week when schooling that he may go out favourite for the Great Northern Hurdles.

.It is reported to be the present intention of Mr R. Hannon to start both Snake and Royal Abbey in the Great Northern Hurdles. W. Rennie will be Snake and R. McTavish on Royal Abbey. The New Zealander Tigrinia was unplaced with 7st in the Flying Handicap at Canterbury Park on May 6th. On the same day Molyneux, 9.5, was a good second favourite in the Canterbury Handicap (1* miles and 100 yards), but the best he could do was to finish second to the favourite, Llanthony, 7.10. <T^,, New Zealand-bred one in Kilwa (Kilbroney-Divmia) won the Victoria Park Handicap in Sydney last month. Krlwa was bred by Mr J. B. Beid. B. Lewis, the Victorian horseman, has a marvellous record in Australian claasio events, and at the recent S.A.J.C. meetlyl? he rode his seventh winner of the t>.A.J.C. St. Ledger on King Ingoda by Oomedy Krug from Ingoda, the latter by ? won races in New Zealand tor the late Mr Duncan Rutherford.

AN EASY VICTORY

AN ANXIOUS FIFTEEN MINUTES. (Received June 1, 7.5 p.m.) . , , LONDON, May 31. Thirty started in the Derby. Jacquot and Psychology led at Tattenham Corner, where Donoghue came through on the rails to win in the easiest fashion by four lengths from Tamar, who was three lengths ahead of Craigangower. St. Louis was fourth, and Simon Pure fifth. Pondoland ran badly, and was never prominent.

A quarter of an hour before the', race, when Donoghue was about to mount, he noticed that one of Captain Cuttle’s racing plates had spread. There was just time to find a farrier, hut the horse wgs still slightly lame. The trainer was alarmed, and decided on an infinitesimal injection of cocaine in the horse’s foot. Meanwhile Captain Cuttle missed the parade, and a thousand rumours were circulating, but when Donoghue appeared he received an ovation. He gave the horse a short, sharp run. and was satisfied all was well acain, but the connections of the horse had a bad quarter of an hour. The race was won in 2min 34 3-ssec—a record.

Lord Astor, owner of Tamar, has thrice previously been the owner of the, second horse in the Derby. Last year it was Oraig-an-eran. in 1919 Buchan, and in 1918 Blink. The last-napied ran in the substitute Derby at Newmarket.

THE GRAND NATIONAL

SUGGESTIONS BY S.P.C.A. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. (Received June 1. 9.55 p.rrr) LONDON, June 1. The Society for tile Prevention of Cruelty to Animals suggests that the Grand National authorities should arrange eliminating trials, reducing the Grand National to a dozen proved jumpera and stayers; also that hopelessly inill m[ animals showfd be killed immediiately without awaiting the owners’ consent.
