ON SOUTH END OF BARRIER
VESSEL HEAVILY KNOCKED ABOUT. Messages received during the early hours of this morning emphasised the vessel’s plight. At 1.38 a.m., the following message arrived from the Wiltshire: “Very badly on shore; Nos. 1 and 2 holds full of water; vessel knocking about heavily; immediate assistance required to save life. Very thick weather; ship on southern end of Great Barrier Island. Several steamers coming, too far off for reply.” Auckland advised her as follows: —. “Harbourmaster stateß tug is being dispatched as soon as possible. Wiltshire advised.” At 4.4 a.m., the Wiltshire advised: Nos. 1,2, 3, and 4 holds now full of water; other part of ship dry; if weather moderates, might save cargo in after-hold; fear ship total wreck.” A message received at 5.5 a.m. stated: “Fear ship will now he total wreck; terrifio sea; only hope of saving Jifo is all to remain on hoard until weather moderates, as no lifeboat could live; will wire later.” At 5.41 a.m., :t was reported that the Kaitoa was two miles off. and the Arahure ten miles. At 7.31 this morning the Arabura advised: “In position of wreck; too inch sea to attempt any rescue ork.” Tho master of the Kaitoa adsed at 9.20 a.m., that ho was in >rt at Tryphena (at tho southern end . tho Island), and had sent a party erland. Auckland radio station at 10.11/ n. advised that it was in communi--ion with the Arahura and the Kai- “ Tho Wiltshire's holds are full water, and in a pretty had way.” further message at 1 (111. l reported: ■le (sisition wort: and desperate.” I
