OWNERSHIP OF SHEEP

VALUE OF EARMARKS. PER PRESS ASSOCIATION. TIMARU, May 31. At tho Magistrate’s Court to-day, five or six hours were spent in a dispute between two farmers, who are neighbours, as to the ownership cf four sheep, one claiming on a brand and tho other on an earmark. Tho evidence of Huddlestone, tho local stock inspector, and Nioholson, secretary of the Sheep-owners’ Union, showed that an earmark, alono, quite unsatisfactory as a mark 'of ownership, there being so many marks duplicated in tho district (fourteen in the Geraldine County). “Sheop have not enough ears to carry marks tor everybody,” tho witness said.

Other evidence, as to sox, breed, and age was contradictory and confusing. The magistrate dealt at some length with the difficulties met with in slieepntealing cases, in which an earmark was relied on, and gave judgment in favour of claimant bv brand.
