EARLY SETTLEBS
ANNUAL MEETING- OP ASSOCTA. TION. The seventh annual meeting ol the Early Settlers’ and Historical Association of Wellington was held last night at Dustin’s rooms, Cuba street. The Hon. J. E. Jenkinson, president, was in the chair, and, an moving tho adoption of the report and balancesheet, said the committee had tried to carry ont the objects of the association as far as lay in thek power. Ha felt that they had been quite successful, and had been ' able to gather together quite a large number of early settlers at different gatherings. Also, a number of historical articles had been secured, which would become more valuable as time goes on. The late treasurer, Mr Staoe, had given some articles to the society, including old photographs and maps of Wellington, and Mr G. M. Bagot, late of the Rnblic Library, bad given a copy of the Treaty of W aitangi, and of all papers relating to it, a very valuable historical relio; also nine copies of photographs of early Wellington had been secured, which showed what strides had been made in the last 70 or 80 yean. The gifts put the committee into a peculiar position, as the association had no place in which to store them. Some were being held by Mr McKay, but the need far securing a home of its own was imperative for the association, where a room as fireproof as possible could be used for this purpose. Mr Jenkinson also referred to the less by death of several members, which, while they deplored the loss, was to be expected in an association of this kind. The report and balance-sheet wero adopted. Sir George Hunter, M.P., was elected president, and the chairman stated he felt the election a very fitting one. as Sir George Hnnter had been one of the first Mayors of Wellington.
