The Colonial Sugar Company’s steamer Rona arrived at Auckland at midday on Saturday after a prolonged passage of eight days from Newcastle owing to stormy weather. She left Newcastle on May 19th and experienced fine weather the first day out. The following day tho wind increased! from the south-east until it was blowing a hard gale, accompanied by a heavy sea,. As the vessel approached New Zealand: the wind changed to the east and north-east and blew with extreme violence. Heavy seas broke en board and flooded the decks fore and aft. Steaming against tho gale was difficult, and at times the vessel was making only four knots.

THE ROMANCE OF A DREDGE. Fitted with single propeller machinery, the recently-commissioned Progress left Port Chalmers last-Friday for Lyttelton, Pieton and Greymouth, on her first voyage as a steamer. After many years’ service as a dredge at Oamaru, the Progress was converted' into a threemasted schooner at Port Chalmers toward the end of the wax. She made a voyage to Australia, and also carried several cargoes on the New Zealand coast. As a schooner, she did not come up to expectations, and she was laid up iu Carey Bay for many months. It was then decided to convert the" Progress into a steamer, the work being completed about two weeks ago. Seafaring men express the opinion that she will preve a success, and a payahle coastal carrier. On two harbour runs from Dunedin to Port Chalmers, her propelling machinery worked satisfactorily. She will bo employed carrying coal and timber from Greymouth to various coastal ports.
