UNITES STATES TRADE
NEED FOR PERMANENT TARIFF. STRESSED BY SENATOR LODGE. Australian and N.Z. Cable Asrohfioa. (Received May 29, 7.45 p.m.) WASHINGTON, May 28. Senator Lodge, in the course of * statement, declares that the Democrats aro responsible for the delay in secur. ing the approval of the permanent tar. iff. , t He points out that, under the emergency tariff, United States trade is becoming more normal than that of any other nation, and a permanent tariff would mark even a greater ad. vance in United States trade, domestio and foreign. He adds that the build, ing up of business in this country will not depress the business of the world. During the past four months the Tin. ited States imported, through Boston, 69,000,000 pounds of wool, a seventh of the United States consumption. Importers were holding this in bond awaiting the passage of the new tariff, when rates will be lower.
