PETONE NAVALS

WAR MEMORIAL UNVEILED. YESTERDAY’S CEREMONY. The ceremony of unveiling the war memorial to members of the Petone Navals’ Club who fell in the Great War took place yesterday morning at St. Augustine’s Church, Petone, Tho service, which was of a most impres-

sive character, .was performed by Chap- - lain the Ven. .Archdeacon Rusnell, and tho memorial was unveiled by Briga-dier-General Richardson, who paid a 1 high tribute to the men of the Petone Navals and the remainder of the 17,000 New Zealanders who made the supreme sacrifice for King, country, and Empire, and for liberty, truth, and righteousness. In the course of his remarks, he emphasised the great need for preparedness for defence, saying that, while we all desired peace, it was, nevertheless, essential that the young men. in the community should keep in training so as to be in readiness for any eventualities that might arise. Such preparedness was in itself, he contended, one of the greatest guarantees of the continuance of peace. The memorial took the form of a handsome brass tablet, inscribed with tho names of tho twenty-six men of the Petone Navals’ Club who lost their lives during the war. Headed by the New Zealand Artillery Band, tho 17th Battery and the New Zealand Artillery, the members and ex-members of the J’etone Navals, the ex-members of the No. 5 Company of the New Zealand Garrison Artillery, and a body of returned soldiers paraded at the Petone railway station and marched to St. Augustine’s Church, where a large congregation had gathered to witness the unveiriHJj of the memorial.
