COMMUNITY SINGING
MEETING OF COMMITTEE. ARRANGEMENTS WELL IN HAND. •A meeting of the Community Singing Committee was hold last night in the Town Hall. The president, His Worship the Mayor (Mr R. A. Wright, M.P.) presided, and present were Messrs A. E. Russell, J. F. Carr, \V. H. Long. G. W. Hughes, A. L. Wilson, H. F. Wood, W. Goudie, C. E Webb and H. C. W. Blick. A letter from the Community Singing Committee at Adelaide was received. It stated thata the movement which was started there in 1920 was now firmly established, and it was obvious that that was what the people wanted. Mr C. Webb stated that the movement had developed in Adelaide from practically nothing to a turnover of £3OO per year. It was stated that Mr H_ C. W. Blick, who had been elected secretary and treasurer, found himself unable to accept the post.owing to the demands upon his time. A sub-commit-tee consisting of Messrs A. E. Russell and C. E. Webb was appointed to act in the meantime and to consider measures of filling the post. Mr Webb reported for the sub-com-mittee appointed to wait upon the finance committee of the City Council to obtain their assistance. They had ,put their case before the council at its last meeting. His Worship the Mayor announced that the finance committee had been strongiy sympathetic, but wished for the singing committee to carry on for five or six weeks before acting. As regards the Town Hall, it had been decided that the council could not depart from their fixed rule of making a charge for hire; but that they would let the Concert Chamber at the rate of 10s 6d to the Community Singing Committee. It was decided to hold the first song service pn Monday next. The, leader will be Mr C. Mee, accompanist Miss M. Cocks, soprano Miss May Foulds. It was decided to ask Mr R. Parker to lead the singing on April 17th, Air Russell on the 19th, and Mr Temple White for the 26th, Mr Newton on May 3rd, Mr L. Watkins on the 10th, Mrs , Russell on May 17th, and Mr E. J. Hill on May 24th.
