AT THE BASIN

WELLINGTON V. HUTT. \ LATTER'S BRILLIANT, START. The chief characteristic of the game at the Basin Reserve on Saturday between Wellington and Hutt, was the latter's fine opening in their first innings, when Aldersley and Hughes were able to carry their bats for a total of 113, and retire "not out" for the day. Wellington batted first, with Hidllestone and C. G. Wilson at the crease. The latter, however, was unable to open his scoring accqunt, and was caught by Hughes off a good delivery from Nunn. Anderson was next, and enjoyed a longer and more exciting reign with Hiddlestone, but when the partnership had added 81 runs to the score Anderson was run out. Burton commenced by hitting two successive “fours” to past point. He went out of office after a few minutes play following a brilliant catch at square leg by McGirr from a ball by Balks. Jennings, who followed, made a determinted stand until nicely caught in the long field by Langford. Bruges came in but was unable to “get his eye in" and was bowled by Nunn for one run. Middleton and Fauvel went out for “ducks" at tho triegv bowling of McGirr. Wilson joined' Hiddlestone, but after hitting a “four” and a two he sent back a ball to the bowler, McGirr, who took the catch. Wagstafle was dismissed by Aldersley after securing thirteen runs. The final partnership, Patterson and Hiddlestone, resulted in the latter paving “weakened" during the innings, going out to the first delivery by McGirr. This proved his downfall, and the innings concluded with 176 runs in their favour. The Hutt team commenced their innings at 4.35 p.m., with Aldersley and Hughes batting. They had the benefit of a slightly improved wicket; but were under a disadvantage of had light about twenty minutes before the innings closed. Both batted consistently and oarofully, and were "settling down" to seriousness when "time" was declared. Aldersley had secured 68 and Hughes 45. Following are the scores;
