LAWN TENNIS

NEW ZEALAND ASSOCIATION. ANN UAH MEETING OF COUNCIL. The annual meeting of the council of tho New Zealand Lawn Tennis Association was held in the Accountants’ Chambers, Johnston street, last night. Mr M. E. Denniston was elected to the chair, there being a full attendance _of representatives of the 'affiliated associations. In speaking to tho adoption of the report and balance-sheet (which has been, previously published in. the Press) the chairman said he felt justified (although a member of the management committee) in saying that the association was to bo congratulated on the result of the year’s work. . A TENNIS REVIVAL. "There is no question," said tho chairman, “but that the year j ust closed marks the beginning of a very important term is revival, and I am confident that in the coming year we will find the game progressing to an amazing extent; this revival is reflected in the enthusiasm of most of the secretaries of affiliated associations who (aa is stated) have very materially assisted your committee. "Your committee has devoted a considerable amount of time to the affairs of the association and has had many important matters to decide. Possibly the most momentous question was that involving the agreement between Australia and . ourselves with reference to the Davis Cup; after mature consideration it was resolved to terminate this agreement, and our next step must be in the direction of seekine out and training players who may be deemed worthy to represent this country as challengers for the tennis championship. lam optimistic enough to believe that the time is not far distant when we shall have found these players. In this connection. I desire to put forward a suggestion, that it be a recommendation to the incoming committee to consider the question of engaging a competent coach for . New Zealand. ... I feel that you will agree with me that despite the necessary secondary place, our 1920 New Zealand championships had to take in view of the Davis Cup contest the meeting was a successful one. JUNIOR TENNIS FLOURISHING. "Junior tennis is flourishing in the country. In this connection I wish to refer to the Wellington and Otago Junior Associations. The parent body has laid down a policy, which I feel you wiill agree is a wise one, of Encouraging the organisation of properly . constituted bodies as it would-be impossible as well as impolitic to make a grant to say a club here or a school 1 there and affiliated associations should do .their best to encourage the formation er junior associations. FINANCIAL -POSITION. "The only transaction showing a loss is the New South AYales versus New Zealand match. The conditions under which this match was played were, unfortunately, not favourable. The importance of the match was obscured hy the Davis Cup match and the New Zealand championships. The seven continuous days-of tennis had more than satisfied the public.' Added to this the members -of the team were tired out and did not do themselves justice. Under the circumstances the loss of the match, may be considered reasonable. The item of £8 for entertainment at Rotorua is the extent of your association’s entertainment of the visitors. This amount was incurred by our president, who arranged for a special entertainment bv the Maoris at Rotorua in honour of the visitors." . After reviewing the whole of the financial position, the chairman said, "It is thus plain that unless the championship meeting can show a profit there may be a loss in the coming year, and the amounts voted for subscriptions and donations will have to be carefully considered. The amounts written off are mainly for the outstanding subscriptions, and it has been considered advisable, in view of the successful year we have had, to give some of the weaker associations an opportunity to place themselves on a better financial footing. The balancesheet speaks for itself, and must be considered very satisfactory. The amount standing to the credit of tho Wilding memorial fund is earmarked for the purchase of a shield for the inter-assooiation competition;. I think that a policy should bo laid down that certain monies should be earmarked for particular purposes, There should be a sum available, when the time comes, for Davis Cup expanses, as I fear we will receive hut little from our partnership with Australia." "It is hoped. that before long it will he possible to reduce capitation, costs, but associations should not expect too much in this direction." The report and balance-sheet were adopted with discussion. ELECTION OF OFFICERS. The office bearers for the ensuing season were appointed as follow: —Patron, His Excellency the Governor-General, Viscount Jellicoe; president, W. N. Seay, Esq. (Canterbury); vice-presidents, H. R. The management committee recommended, and it was deoided “That the council amend rale 63 (in connection with the championship banner) so 'that the points to be scored for the five events named in the rule shall be two points for each event. .
