WELLINGTON’S TASK

IN WAR RELIEF MUCH WORK HONE FOR OTHER CENTRES. THiB SOLDIERS HELPED. The following is an extract from the monthly report of the applications committee of the Wellington. War Relief Association, which was made to a meeting of the association’s executive yesterday : “It has been frequently stated that, primarily os the result of the military and ■ geographical position of your association, you have had to carry- out for other societies a very much larger amount of -work than they perform for you. As evidence of the correctness of those statements, it may he said that during the period under review, your committee dealt with 87 claims which are the responsibility of other societies, whilst they dealt with 25 cases for which you are responsible. “Ten per cent, of the applications dealt with shade the last, meeting of your executive committee were lodged by Australia (7) and Imperial (13) soldiers, giving your committee cause to again express concern at the increasing number of applications presented to you bv men who did not serve with the N.Z.E.F-, and whilst you have power under your constitution to extend assistance to such claimants, your committee has already expressed ate conviction that the interests of our own disabled soldiers and their dependents must not be thereby prejudiced. “It will have been noted that during the period under review, your committee have rendered assistance to thoes engaged in agricultural, industrial and commercial pursuits, tor apart foam the loans approved by your finance committee, your applications committee has awarded grants tor the purchase of m&chines required by disabled soldiers established in bootmaking and other businesses ; has supplied cans to other disabled soldiers engaged in besketmakmg industry, has issued orders for tools of trade,- paid entrance fees to various unions, and sent a number of men. to employment. The pensions of other disabled men whilst unemployed have been supplemented, and financial assistance extended in numerous directions to the wives and ' other dependents of ouir soldiers."
