TO COMMEMORATE WAR HEROES. IMPROVING THE FORESHORE. A meeting of residents of Island Bay was convened by the Island Bay Municipal Electors’ and Ratepayers’ Association last evening for thj purpose of discussing a proposal for-the .erection of a, memorial baud rotunda on' the oouncil’s property near the foreshore, in honour of the men of the district who served at the war. The president (Mr Q. O. Odlin) presided. In introducing the Mayor (Mr R. A. Wright, M.P.), the chairman invited a free - discussion as to the form . the memorial should fake. Mr Wright congratulated 'the residents of the bay on their very zealous electors’ association. Island Bay was a fast-growing district, -and -would expand to an even greater extent when it had its tramway duplication. Nothing would appeal more to .visitors to the district than a memorial such as wae proposed „ He was pleased to see that Island Bay residents were showing an independent spirit in attending to their local war memorial, without expecting the municipality or the 'Government to do everything. He also noted with pleasure ;the ‘epirijfc of reciprocity to the provision# of the City Council in improving the foreshore. Re; ferring to the men of the district who had fallen in the war, Mr Wright said that their sacrifices were worthy of anything the residents could provide in the form of a memorial. Mr G. Mitchell, M.P., also addressed the meeting. If was decided that a committee be set up to consider ways and means of erecting a suitable memorial. The committee will report to a meeting to be held on Monday next as to what form it considers the memorial should take. The opinion o'f those present- was not unanimous on the proposal for a band rotunda; some favoured a monument, others a memorial in the form of handsome entrance .gates to the foreshore park, while others supported the rotunda suggestion.
