DESIRED BY FARMERS DOMINION CONFERENCE! OPENED IN WELLINGTON. THE ANNUAL MEETING. > The annual conference of the New Zea land Farmers* Union opened in Wellington yesterday. Mr G. AY*. Leadley presided. Remits dealing with land legislation were passed as follows: — That the occupiers of all Crown leasehold land be granted the option of buying the same That the Government be urged to legislate to provide better facilities for holders of native leaseholds to purchase the freehold of their holdings. That, all third-class Crown lands be thrown open for selection under the homestead system. That the Government be asked to resubmit all acquired lamds which have been vacant for twelve months or more at. such terms as wall ensure their immediate occupation. That practical men conversant with local conditions should act in conjunction with Land Purchase Boards; that the provincial executives in the different districts be asked to recommend such appointments; and, that all land acquired for soldier settlement should be thrown open for selection at such time as to allow the. settler th© benefits of the coming season.

That the Farmers’ Union be asked to co-operate with local bodies in connection with the rating of native lands in order to see that native lands pay their fair share of taxation the same as European lands, and that representations be made to the Government in the matter.

That the Government be urged to provide the necessary legislation giving power to the Minister for Lands to agree to accept the surrender of a Crown lease, particularly when large areas of land are held upon such terms and conditions ns the Minister for Lands may agree to. and particularly to have power for tKe tenant to retain portion of the land under a fresh lease upon such terms and conditions as may be agreed to with or without compensation for any or all of the ten ants' improvements.
