AN ALIEN
LANDS WITHOUT A PERMIT. DEPORTATION ORDERED. ■Described as a Swede, Yrjo Grongos, for whom Mr W. E. Leicester appeared, yesterday, entered a plea of guilty to a charge of landing in New Zealand, being a prohibited person. Mr Leicester stated that on May Bth accused and three other men had deserted from the s.e. Pampa, a vessel for which G. H. Scales and Co. had acted as agents. Accused had signed on at Buenos Ayres, and the vessel had Been bound for London. Told by the Collector of Customs that he could land if granted a permit, hut must obtain permission from the captain of the vessel, Grongos had endeavoured to obtain the sanction of the commander. The food on the ship had not agreed with him (he said), and finding it itn possible to convince the captain, he had left the ship, forfeiting his pay, and gone up country, where he had been working ever since. Mr Leicester submitted that a nominal penalty should be imposed; but as the Customs authorities requested- deportation, the magistrate issued an order that Grongos should be detained until arrangements could he made for him to be sent away. Mr Leicester was advised to approach the Minister for Customs upon the question of a permit, as accused was prepared to take the oath of allegiance.
