Sir William Fraser. M.L.C., who been laid up for some time past with pneumonia at the Bowen street private hospital, was reported yesterday to bp progressing very favourably. It i 4 understood, indeed, that he is so far recovered that he will probably be leaving the hospital in the course of a few days.

The Hon. J. G. Coates. Minister for Public Works, is due to leave Wellington to-day for the north, and will pay visitf to {Hamilton, Auckland, the Wainku and Pollok settlements. The Minister will also inspect the Awatere electric works and the suggested site for Hie J* l " at Arapunl.

The death has occurred of Mr Frank Harrison, of Upper Plain, Masterton, at the age of 70. The late Mr Harrison, in his younger days, was a noted cricketer in tne district, and in later year was an enthusiastic member of the Masterton Bowling Club and one of its most experl players.

The news has been received of the death of Dr G. B. Longstaff, M.D., Oxon*. F.R.C.P.. F.SA., F.C.S.. F-G.fi., and J -P., of Wandsworth, England, who* some years ago visited Masterton as the guest of his cousin, Mr ponald Donald. He was born in Wandsworth, on February 12th, 1849, and was the second son cf Dr G- D. Longstaff.

Black, editor of the. “”Na< tjonal Review/* and honorary general organiser for the New Zealand Political Party, - goes to Christchurch to-night, in. continuance of the propaganda of the party, and expects to have the. Christchurch District Council completed in a short time. This will then have completed the initial activities of the party by the linking up of the four centres.

Mr G- R. Holden Webb, of the East* era Extension Cable Company's service, who attained the rank of major in the Royal Engineers daring ths wax. was invested with the decoration of the 0.8. E. (military division) by the Gov* ernor of the Straits Settlements at the King's Birthday parade at Singapore. Mr Webb is the eldest eon of the late Colonel W. Holden Webb, formerly office; commanding th© Otago and South* land military districts.

Captain A. Lockie. who is in command of the missing Canastota, was an old Auckland boy, whose father was in the New Zealand Customs Department, tain Lockie was for some time a mate in the Union Steam Ship Company. He was captain of the pilot boat for the Auckland Harbour Board*, and subsequently captain of the Lyman D. Foster on her first voyage. This vessel was afterwards lost at sea. Shortly after relinquishing this' command Captain Lockie went to America.

The deceased was born at Frilford. * Abingdon, Berkshire. educated at Marlborough College, and came to New Zealand in 1882 to manage the Silverhope Estate, ovnai by Mr Silver. Diddams (Nationalist*, who wag elected Mayor of Brisbane, is an old Auckland 'boy. A good many years ago he occupied a position on the "staff of the "Auckland Star." Mr Diddams has for some considerable time been in Australia, and was formerly Mayor of Adelaide. During that term of office the distinction *J » C.AI.GJ was conferred upon him. • The absence from yesterday's confer* ence of the Farmers’ Union of the late Major Lusk and the late Mr Richard Evans was feelingly referred to shortly after proceedings opened, and the following resolution was grassed'“That this Dominion Conference places on record its regret at the passing of two of its most esteemed and respected members. In the persons of the late Mr Richard of Canterbury, and Major Lusk, of Auckland —unique men in. both instances, not only as old pioneers of the Dominion, but also as Imperialistic units of the British Empire!
