There was a sensational accident on the Rimutaka Hill on Saturday night last A car, driven by Fred. Butterworth, of Greytown, was returning after the Springbok match, with ten passengers, when, roundihg the Devil’s Elbow, the wheels skidded, and the car dashed over the road, slithering down a deep slope, a distance of some forty feet. ,Thepassengers were thrown all ways. One, Thompson Turei, generally known as Thompson Edwards, caught a foot in the steering wheel, and his back was bent across the seat of the car. The further fall of the car was stayed by a clump of manuka, which saved a further sheer drop of some 300 or 400 feet. Thompson was released, and taken to the Greytown Hospital. He lies in a precarious condition. It is feared his back is btrqken. The others' escaped with a shaking.
