gathering of the clans. SUCCESSFUL OPENING AT TOW2* TTAT.L A grand Scottish fair and clan gatlMiW ing was held in the Town. Hall on Saturday evening in aid of the funds of th© Caledonian Society. The fair was opened by His Worship the Mayor (Mr R. A. Wright, M.P.), who was introduced by the chief of th© eo* ciety. Air D. Clark. In. his opening address to a large muster of the clans, Air Wright outlined/the history of the Caledonian Society sine© its inception, thirty yeans agq. H© referred to "th© ideals of that society, which had sought to foster sport and Jjad provided the funds from its sport©* gatherings for tli© erection of the presen® grandstand on the Basin Reserve. Th© present society was practically a rejuvenation of the former one. Its aims were to foster sport and Scottish music, literature and dancing. It carried out good work rn caring for Scottish emigrants*, and 1 wished it every success hb th© future and heartily congratulated Mr Alex. Sutherland on its work in th© past# ! He then declared the fair opc-n. I A special Scottish programme had been arranged for the occasion. The Caledonian orchestra rendered a "Scottish Fantasia.'* and the overture to "Poet and Peasant,” ar.«l a Grand Alarch ("Th© Blaze of Glory’** was performed bv the clan assistants. Highland "lassies-” were responsible for a displnv of Scottish dancing, a Lancashire clog dance &xxd © burlesque "Cning Chong Chinaman.** Miss Phvllis Smvth gave n dog dance, J.
