OBITUARY

DEATH OF MRS\A. R. ATKINSON.

Great regret will be felt at the death, which occurred yesterday, of Mrs Laly May Atkinson, wife of Mr A. R. Atkinson, solicitor. The late Mrs Atkinson was best known as an enthusiastic worker in the cause of women’s rights and temperance. She was bom in Auckland on May 29th, 1866, and- was educated at Mrs Greenwood’s private j school for girls, Wellington. She was married to Mr A. R. Atkinson pn May 6th, 1900. Mrs Atkinson had been a member of the W.C.T.TJ. 'from 1886 to date, recording secretary from 1887 to 1891, and again this year. She was New Zealand president from 1902 to L 905. Mrs Atkinson was vice-president of the New Zealand Alliance from 1895, and when her husband was elected president .of the alliance at the last annual meeting it was- stated that the honour was a tribute also to the ex- ' cellent work done by Mrs Atkinson. Mrs Atkinson,was a member of the alliance executive from 1893 to date. She was a member of the national campaign committee in 1919, and a member of the Wellington Prohibition League from it® foundation. The late Mrs Atkinson was- also for many years' president of the society for the Protection of Women and Children, and Was re-elected in 1920. She was president of the Pioneer Club from 1914 to 1919, and also a member of the re-cently-appointed Board .of Appeal in connection with the censorship of picture films.
