PALMERSTON NORTH SENSATION. Per Press Association. PALMERSTON N„ July IS. A case causing quite a sensation was heard to-day. Four worn on— ono an aid-age pensioner, one a recent arrival from Enriand, one the wife frf a wealthy farmer, and one a young girl—were convactpd of shop-lifting and* Stealing glasses from a hotel where they had bean drinking. Each was sentenced to a fortnight’s imprisonment, and two of them to an additional month’s hard labour, the eentenoee to be concurrent. FURTHER DETAILS A SATURDAY MORNING EPIDEMIC. " (Special to “Times.”) PALMERSTON N.,. July 17; -An epidemic of shop-lifting took place on Saturday morning in Palmerston North, ana caused quite a stir among some of the business houses. Complaints were made to the police from three different sources, and Sen-ior-Sergeant. Fitzpatrick, Detective Oulloty and Constable Murphy immediately went out in search and unearthed a suspected' party of women. The party had apparently visited the premises of Messrs C. M. Ross and Co., Ltd., D. M. George, and the Premier Drapery Co., Ltd. After making inquiries *the police arrested Ada Brothers and Ada Prouse, both of Longburn, in tho P.D.C. Co., _ Margaret Conhn, Palmerston North, in Fitzhesrbert street, and Nellie Buick, of Longburn, in Kitzherbert street. Ada Brothers was charged with stealing three aprons, one scarf, three handkerchiefs, four pairs of stockings, one roll of ribbon valued at £4 9s 4d, the property pf the Premier Drapery Co. A remand was granted. Bail was allowed. Nellie Buick was charged with stealing half a dozen ladies’ pocket handkerchiefs and one roll of ribbon, valued at 4s 4d, the property of the Premier Drapery Co. A remand on hail was also granted in this case. Ada 'Prouse and Margaret Conjin were jointly ' charged with stealing eight pairs of socks, valued at £1 6s, the property of the D. M. George estate. The boil of Margaret Conlin was a personal surety on account of old age.
