FINED FOR ASSAULT
A SOUTHERN SCHOOL TEACHER. Per Press Association. DUNEDIN. July 18. Peter Johann Anderson, a school teacher at North-east Valley, was fined £4, with costs, on a chaTge of assaulting a pupil, Alexander Franklin Campbell. The statement showed that accused had charge of the fourth standard on the sth inst. The children had fallen into line in the usual manner, when tk boy named McDonald came along on a cycle, and a boy named Stevens left the ranks to let him in. Accused smacked him on the face, and in attempting to repeat the blow, Stevens ducked, with the result that Campbell was struck and knocked down, resulting in slight concussion. The defence, while pleading guilty, affirmed that the bey was not knocked down, but stumbled against a wall when he was walking away after the blow. Accused hacTCeen twice wounded, and had since suffered badly from his nerves. He had only returned to the. school after a break-down when the incident occtflTed.
