The fortnightly moeting of the Wesley Church Literary and Debating Society was held on Friday night, when a very interesting lecture was delivered by Mr H. E. Edwards on “Early New Zealand.” Mr Edwards gave a brief outline of the manner! in which the country was first settled, . and of the difficulties and .hardships experienced by the pioneers. Then, at the request of the meeting, he proceeded to deal more particularly with tho history of Fort Nicholson, tracing the development of the settlements at Petone and the different parts of Wellington. The many interesting and amusing anecdotes helped to make the evening extremely enjoyable. Hearty votes of thanks were accorded Mr Edwards and Mr G. Freeman, who acted as chairman.
