WELLINGTON CLUB. * Play in the annual championship tourney of the Wellington fhess Club is somewhat in arrear—mainly owing to the fact that three Saturday evenings were to the recent telegraphic match against the Canterbury Club. Mr Barnes (ex-charopion) is leading with three clear wins. The next best tallies are: —15. A. Hicks <2—l), ,S. Faulknor (2—l), (veiling (2-0), W. C. White (li—li), G. P. AnJ derson (1 —0), A. W- Gyles (1 —0), and Bruton (1 —0). Mr W. E. Mason, the present champion, has not started as well as usual, but it is expected that he will make a strong run in the remaining ten rounds. A further dozen challenges have been -oosted on the club’s notice board, clearly indicating that these ladder contests have lost none of their popularity. WORKING MEN’S CLUB. The Ngaio CUoaa Club's annual handicap tourney has attracted a dozen entries, the position-of the- leaders being at present as follows;
MASTEHTON v. OTAGO. The recent telegraphic match between these clubs wai very stubbornly contested the final result being an unexpected win for Masterton by one point (?J-6£). The VVairarapa players, who issued their challenge with some diffidence, have received many congratulations on their fine performance. As has been drily remarked they arc astonished, and the Otago players have been surprised. At board 1 Paul Kummir scored a draw J. 13. Dunlop (New Zealand champion), and at board 2 his cousin, F. Kumraer (the well-known Congress playet) defeated an old friend in the person' of A. W. 0. Davies (an ex-chamj)ion of New Zealand).
