RACING IN THE AIR
THRILLING SCENES AT HENDON. Australian and N.Z. Gable Association. (Received. July 17, 11.5 p.m.) LONDON, July 16. The first inter-university air race between Oxford and Cambridge, with three machines a-side, of a similar type, preceded the Aerial Derby at Hendon. The course was 120 miles, and Cambridge won. All the competitors were erstwhile war pilots. Seven Derby entrants out of nineteen were scratched. “Mars,” with a 450 horse-power Napier-Lion engine, and piloted, by J. H. James, won in the fastest time over tho 200-mile course and also won the first handicap prize. Lieutenant Longton, of. the Australian Flying Corps,, piloting SES. 220 horse-power Wolhely-Viper, won. the second handicap prize of £IOO.
