SALARIES AND GENERAL EXPENSES * REDUCED. “A BLAST FROM THE' BANK.” The usual monthly meeting of the Hutt County Council Was held yesterday morning, Mr J. Barclay presiding. SALARIES REDUCED. On the recommendation of the finance committee, moved by tho. chairman, to reduce the salary of the inspector (Mr J. W. Cudby) by £25 a year. Councillor Atkinson said that no slur Whatever was intended upon the inspector. The time had come when the,- council must cut down expenditure in view of the stringent financial conditions. He was sure that Mr Cudby would.'"view, the matter iu tho right light, and he wflling to assist the council to tide over the prevailing pinch. It would help the council materially in making the other necessary reductions. A TEMPORARY STEP. Councillor Whiteman »and Mr McKay concurred in this view, stressing tho points that the step was a temporary one, taken with great regret, and that po sliy on Mr Cudby was involved. Councillor Foley opposed the motion. The chairman said tho council Jhad had its ‘'blast” from the bank in regard to its overdraft. It had been said that the small economies proposed would have Bo effect, but they had had a vejy good effect; and he was very glad indeed that the matter had been taken in hand before they eot the “blast” from the bank. The recommendation was carried with one dissentient. l REDUCING CARTAGE EXPENSES. On the motion of the chairman, seconded by Councillor Foley, it was decided to reduce, as from July 12th, the amounts paid for cartage to the following:—Man, dray, and one horse 22s per day; man and two-horse dray, 30s; and man, dray, and three horses, 38s per day. A PAEKAKARIKI ROAD, Mr Phillips, of Pakuratahi, interviewed the coundil and,.asked that' the road leading to his property be properly repaired and metalled. He was unable to get ou't at present with his metor-lorry, and had not, in consequence, been able to earn anything for days past. A grant of £l2O 'had been made by the Govern-'* ment for the repair of the road, and he urged that the council should make application for the money and carry out the work. M . , , . The chairman said that, unfortunately. Like many other grants,, the grant had been retracted before tbe council bad been informed that the money was available; arid the 'council would be much more fortunate than if bad been in other cases if the application was successful. On the motion of Councillor Whiteman. it was decided to make application for the grant. ; FEWER RANGERS.' The decision to rive a month’s notice to tho main ranger was adherfed to, and it was resolved that each permanent road man should be required-to act is ranger to his part of the district. LAYfJT'G UP .THE CRUSHER.
