LOWER HUTT AFFAIRS
BOROUGH COUNCIL MEETS. BUSINESS AT .LAST NIGHT'S SITTING. The fortnightly meeting of the Lowex Hutt Borough Council was held in the Council Chambers last evening. Those piesent were Councillors A. Mcßain, \V. Meldrum, J. Brassell, J. Mitchell, W. T. Strand, W. T. Cotton, W. V. Dempsey, and A. J. West. The Mayor (Mr E. P. Hishworth) presided. The Local Deputy Public Trustee wrote inquiring the rental required for the lease of Martin street. The Mayor moved, Councillor West seconded, that a lease be granted for five years at a rental of £2 10s per year. Councillor Strand stated that he would rather that the land were sold outright, as this would save the council from the necessity of forming a road in the future. The motion wias carried. The Valuation Department stated that exception was being taken to the. amended values of the Cudby leetate. They asked that an assessor be appointed, and the council determined to appoint Mr 11. U. Leighton. Thd* Department of Labour wrote requesting that a cheque be forwarded in payment of war bonus to certain employees of the council. The Mayor stated that in his opinion the oversight of not paying the bonus was due.to the fact that the council had not received full particulars regarding it. The Engineer stated that he had not received particulars of amended award, hurt the Labour Department affirmed that they had been sent out. It'was decided bo write the Minister for Labour withdrawing the strictures placed upon his department. The Upper Hutt Town Board advised that in due course a conference of local bodies would be held to discuss the jformation of a Hydro-Electric Power Board. The Petone Borough Council wrote, under date of July Ist, advising that the normal supply of gas. was once more available. It was decided to grant a tempbrary permit to Clendon Bros, to make an extension to their grain store, which is in the brick area. A
